I Am An Amulet --
Shimmer Yellow Gold

by anah childes

he universe moved me this morning.

You moved me last night with the touch of a saint saving a sinner.
I am an amulet.
Shimmer yellow gold -- shimmer yellow and gold
Hung around the souls of men.
Gingerly finger the thought of tender love -- tender touch
Flip falling like loose leaves leaving limbs naked.
Is me.

I stumble home from my night of no sleep
Smothered in your grasp
Because every time I tried to move
You groped me back
"Stay with me. If you leave, don't do it in the sneaky night. Do now. Do now"
and one, two, three, I measure your sigh -- you sleep -- I don't move.

I stayed.
And took my chances at not sleeping.
Your little girl, Miranda
Snuck next to my naked body
Pat, patter, pat, patter
Whimper
Plummet -- and she was next to me.
Her two year old little soul-snoring, sniffing -- smothering my sleep too.

And morning, morning bright
Morning rain
Morning coffee
You shift into me
Into me one more time
As if morning could hold us in the predawn safety
"scare the boogie men away."
Waifs don't got no homes.

So up on our feet
Scurry
You to you
Me to me.

I am an amulet.
Shimmer yellow gold -- shimmer yellow and gold.
Touch me til the tarnish is more precious than the shine.
I will bless your luck.
